Dans le court métrage d’anticipation Howe Are You Island? une voix off mélodieuse explore un paysage peuplé de relations interespèces, dont l’écologie à la fois réelle et numérique. Tourné à Ka-ou-enesegoan (île de Howe) dans le secteur des lacs en Ontario (Canada), ce film suit un protagoniste invisible, possiblement non humain, qui tente non sans difficulté de créer des liens. Soumises à l’émerveillement et au désir, les relations interespèces évoluent de façon cahoteuse. Une fois franchi le voile trompeur de la romance, en traversant ces territoires partagés, un doute surgit quant à la capacité de créer un lien mutuel porteur de sens. Que faut-il donner ou sacrifier pour cela?
Sous forme de fable critique, Howe Are You Island? examine les problèmes issus de notre mode de vie et se demande quelle connexion avec l’environnement et avec d’autres espèces il sera possible d’établir dans le futur.

Frances Adair Mckenzie is a visual artist and animator based in tiohtiá:ke or so-called Montre?al. Her work negotiates formal and speculative investigations into concepts of materiality, staging and form. Always in deference to process as hands-on manipulation of real material and objects, through sculpture, installation and the interfaces of digital technology. Through experimental processes the work pays tribute to the urgency of poetic narratives through durational patterns of magical production and historical desire.
Frances’ video work has been widely exhibited internationally, most notably at the Somerset House London, UK, The MAXXI museum in Rome, IT and MUTEK ES. Frances has exhibited at the Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides, Parisian Laundry, Centre Clark and the Satosphere (SAT) in Montreal. Two animations and a stop-motion virtual reality piece have been produced by the National Film Board. She is currently an artist in residency at the Darling Foundry.
